CURRENT WORK

"Stranded" Short Film

stranded

A blood-soaked woman flees from an isolated cottage in the middle of the night. Inside the partly renovated building, laboured breathing, bloody footprints and congealing blood provide clues to what has gone on there.

Meanwhile, nearby, three workmen excavate a cordoned off area of roadside. Their banter and casual pace contrasts with the woman's isolation and urgency and the eerie stillness inside the house she abandoned. The action shifts between ominous developments at the house, humdrum activities at the roadside and the woman's frantic efforts to get help as she stumbles through the countryside in the dark.

When these strands finally come together, her predicament, her relationship with the men and the full horror of what has happened become manifest.

Tom Waits "Rains On Me" Video Promo

tom

As big fans of the legend that is TOM WAITS, we are currently producing a music promo for the song 'RAINS ON ME' from his ORPHANS album.

We wanted to emulate the 'romantic hobo' imagery that is consistent in Tom's promotional photographs, particularly the photo-montage album covers by Matt Mahurin and portraits by Anton Corbijn. We also wanted a believable world that Tom would inhabit, so we've set the sequence in the Great Depression by compositing background matte paintings and CG elements to the original plates shot in the South Coast of England.
sm 1
A drunken Tom alter-ego awakens in an alley, is yelled at by a neighbour, and wanders the land, trailed by a troupe of vagabond minstrels that follow him across the country. They have the appearance of rejects from a travelling Carnival.

They wander through the barren landscape of 1930's America, past traintracks and mountainscapes*.

Tom is continuously rained upon and we discover he has a small raincloud above him that he can't shake off.

Also with them is a priest, who ends up wrestling with the Tom character during a makeshift baptism in an attempt to redeem his soul.

Tom appears briefly as a cameo** in the guise of the husband from the painting 'American Gothic' by Grant Wood.

In post we are montaging old postcards, news and written letters as well as grading the footage to have a damaged film effect.

*We are compositing imagery from 1930's including a CG train and adding rain effects in post.

**We are experimenting with applying a digital face of Tom Waits to the actor.
